Terry J. Millican: Hill District Grandstand 2025 Breeding Sheep Judge

In the world of livestock judging, where the precision of decisions and expert knowledge make a difference in showcasing the finest breeds, Terry J. Millican stands out as an esteemed figure. For the upcoming Hill District Grandstand 2025, Terry brings his lifelong passion and vast experience to the role of Breeding Sheep Judge.

From Humble Beginnings to Expert Judge

Growing up on a ranch in Coke County near Robert Lee, Texas, Terry’s roots are firmly planted in ranch life. His family raised cattle, sheep, and goats, instilling in him a love for livestock from an early age. At just 14, Terry began raising his first set of ewes for a 4-H and FFA project. This project ignited a passion for the sheep industry that has flourished for over 45 years.

After high school, Terry attended Texas Tech University, where he honed his skills in livestock and wool judging as a member of the university teams. His academic pursuits led him to earn a BS in Agricultural Economics in 1987 and an MS in Agricultural Education in 1991. Armed with this education, Terry embarked on a career with the Extension Service in 1988, beginning as an assistant agent in Gaines County.

A Career Dedicated to Youth and Livestock

Throughout his career, Terry has been dedicated to educating youth about the sheep and goat industry. Serving as the agricultural agent in various Texas counties, including Yoakum, Scurry, and Menard, Terry has guided young 4-H and FFA members to success. Under his mentorship, numerous champions have been crowned at major stock shows across Texas.

Terry’s expertise has also extended beyond state lines, allowing him to judge shows and evaluate livestock in nine different states. His coaching prowess is evident in the six national champion or reserve national champion judging teams he has led.

Family and Interests

Terry is supported by his family, including his wife Ann and their two children, Cheyanne and Carson. Both children have pursued advanced degrees in Animal Science from Texas A&M University, following in their father’s footsteps with a shared passion for agriculture. Cheyanne further expanded her academic pursuits with a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from Texas Tech University, while Carson is currently working towards a PhD in Animal Nutrition.

When not involved in livestock activities, Terry enjoys hunting, fishing, riding horses, and of course, raising livestock—a hobby that continues to fuel his enthusiasm for the industry.
